AB De Villiers won’t be leading South Africa in ODI

AB De Villiers won’t be leading South Africa in the 50-over format of the game anymore and will provide his services to the team only as a player.

50-over format was the only format in which De Villiers was in charge of the South Africa Cricket team. In the two other formats, the South African team was being led by Faf Du Plessis and now after De Villiers’ resignation, Du Plessis is almost certain to be given the responsibility of leading the team in the 50-over format as well. Du Plessis has had a good time as captain in test matches and in 20-over Cricket and after the Champions trophy debacle, many people were of the view that he should be appointed the captain of the One Day team as well. And it seems that De Villiers himself has also realized that it is in the best interests of South African Cricket that Du Plessis takes the charge of the team across all formats. SOUTH AFRICA RANK SECOND IN ICC RANKINGS

South Africa ended with a 1-0 win against New Zealand as the rains forced a draw in the third and final Test after five days in Hamilton.

The result means the African side have lost just one series in the last ten years. They lost to only India in the 2015/16 season. South Africa entered the Test season last summer, placing seventh in the ICC Test team rankings. The result against New Zealand helped them push up to the second spot on the log as they topple Australia. India remain confident at the number one spot, and the Faf du Plessis-led side will be confirmed as the second on April 1. Their clash against New Zealand historically favoured them and they maintained the record. They have defeated them in the last two Test series but they had to score 95 runs to avoid an innings defeat this time. New Zealand gave a big fight but they would not be too disappointed to have lost the game despitehaving a firm grip. The visitors would also ascend in the new rankings. (more…) Read more...

Although Hashim Amla is a part of the World T20 squad of South Africa

Although Hashim Amla is a part of the World T20 squad of South Africa, he would not be a guaranteed pick in the playing XI. South Africa would probably be opening with the destructive pair of AB De Villiers and Quinton De Kock. Amla has not done badly opening the innings for South Africa in the shortest format of the game, but, his strike rate in the middle period of the innings is a concern. He is a boundary hitter in the power play, but, once there are more than two fielders outside the thirty yard circle, his strike rate drops down significantly. The big hitting just does not come naturally to him. However, he is a good player of spin and has played in India many times before and that’s the only reason he is there in the squad. If it’s a real turner, the team management might choose to pick him as an opener as he can make a difference in the low scoring games on those sorts of wickets. On a flat surface though, De Villiers would certainly be a better bet than him. De Villiers is not a natural opener, but, of late, on a couple of occasions, South Africa has tried him as an opener in twenty 20 Cricket and he has shown he can be deadly in that role. South Africans are setting the stage on fire in the current edition

The South Africans are setting the stage on fire in the current edition of the Indian Premier League. Whether you talk about Faf Du Plessis, AB De Villiers or the big, mighty Morne Morkel, each one of them is being sensational so far. Hunting down more than 200 against Mumbai Indians the previous night at home, RCB were looking miles behind until De Villiers came in and smashed it all around. He found the long on fielder at the score of 41 and the job remained unfinished, but, it was one of the most thrilling knocks to have ever been played in the IPL. Ten more minutes of De Villiers that night and Bangalore would have won from the verge of defeat, he was in such lethal form, the Proteas skipper. Du Plessis maybe has not done that much with the bat and that’s because he has not had a settled batting position. He has got pushed to 6 or 7 at times, while, has been asked to bat 4 in a couple of games as well, but, in fielding, he has been as good as anyone else. In the list of the top catches of the tournament so far, Du Plessis features two or three times. As far as Morne Morkel is concerned, he has been the pick of the fast bowlers in the whole tournament along with CSK’s Ashish Nehra. The kind of zip Morkel has generated on lifeless Indian pitches, it’s brilliant. (more…) Read more...

South Africa isnt a Light Team for World Cup Title

South Africa might have lost the second practice match against New Zealand the other day, but, to start taking them lightly because of that result would be a big mistake. Players, sometimes, don’t get motivated enough to bring out their best in practice matches. But, come the tournament proper, there would be different sort of intensity. Also, the pitches on which the practice matches are being played are the side on pitches and they will not be used in the main games. The centre pitches will be used from where the boundaries on both sides will be at more or less at the same distance. (more…) Read more...

Quinton De Kock is terrible News for SA cricket Fans

Quinton De Kock’s recent injury is terrible news for South Africa cricket fans. The wicketkeeper batsman has been ruled out for two months and there is no certainty if he would be fit for the World Cup or not. De Kock is such an important player for South Africa, not just as a wicket keeper, but, as an opening batsman too. He has been groomed in the last couple of years and if he is not there in Australia-New Zealand, South Africa’s campaign would be affected severely. At this point in time, there does not seem to be anybody who is ready to take De Kock’s place in the top order if the young man’s recovery doesn’t go fast enough. (more…) Read more...
